Anaheim Día de los Muertos

Since 2014, SOMOS Anaheim has worked with the City of Anaheim Community Services Department and Anaheim Community Foundation to bring to the community Día de los Muertos: A Night of Community and Culture. We have approached this celebration through a family-friendly lens, with all altars being presented by classrooms and student groups from local schools. There has been a focus on performing arts and crafts for children that help them participate in the festivities.

Día de los Muertos is a centuries-old mexican tradition that fuses indigenous and european cultures. During the festivities, those who have passed away are remembered, most commonly through altars that include photos, flowers, candles, and other items that commemorate their life. Specific celebrations vary by region, with celebrations becoming mainstream in the United States in recent years. Although communities approach the holiday through different lenses and make it their own, the most important common thread is that, regardless of our different cultures, by remembering the dead we are reminded of our common humanity and encouraged to celebrate life together.
